The polls are open for parliamentary elections in Holland, with recent surveys suggesting that the anti-immigration firebrand Geert Wilders and his PVV party could once again emerge victorious, though experts suggest PVV stands little chance of joining the future coalition.

Survey Results and Political Landscape

The PVV, which in the last election achieved a shock first-place finish and established a multi-party right-leaning coalition that lasted barely a year, is now marginally ahead in the polls and is forecast to secure between 24 to 28 MPs in the 150-member house of representatives.

However, the far-right party's popularity has declined since 2023, when it won 37 parliamentary seats. All major parties have publicly ruled out forming a government with Wilders, and who triggered the fall of the previous government in the summer over a dispute concerning his radical anti-refugee proposals.

Key Contenders and Projections

Following a campaign dominated by topics such as migration, healthcare costs, and the nation's severe housing crisis, the centre-left Green Left/Labour party alliance, led by ex-EU official Frans Timmermans, is placed a close second, projected to win between 22 and 26 seats.

Also performing well is the centrist Democrats 66, predicted to increase its seat count nearly fivefold to 21-25 seats, while the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDA) is expected to more than double its number of MPs to between 18 and 22.

Members of the previous government – which included the PVV, liberal-conservative VVD, populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), and NSC – are all forecast to see their representation reduced, with several facing heavy declines.

Voting Process and Fragmentation

Under the proportional Dutch system, securing just 0.67% of the national vote earns a party one MP. Among the two dozen political groups participating in the vote – which include parties for the over-50s, youth parties, for animals, for a universal basic income, and for sport – as many as 16 could enter parliament.

This significant division ensures that no one party is ever likely to win a majority, and Holland has been ruled by coalitions – typically composed of four parties in the last few administrations – for more than a century.

Post-Election Scenarios

The PVV leader claimed that "the democratic process would end" in the Netherlands if the PVV becomes the largest party yet is shut out of power. But, critics and analysts say that first place does not assure government participation and that any coalition with a parliamentary majority is a democratic outcome.

While the election result is hard to predict and coalition talks could take several months, analysts indicate that after the most extreme government in its recent history, the future government is expected to be a inclusive alliance headed by either the centre-left or moderate right.

Election Day Details

Polling stations, including those in the Madurodam model village in the capital and the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam, began operations at 7:30 AM (6.30am GMT) and will close at 9:00 PM. A typically reliable post-voting survey is anticipated shortly after closing time.

Once voting concludes, an informateur will explore possible coalitions that could command a majority in parliament. Prospective coalition members will then draft a governing pact for the coming term and must undergo a vote of confidence in the house before assuming power.
