Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Ace Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.
A single omission was enough. Another and it might have appeared spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to understand that securing World Cup glory will likely need contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is also up to the player to adapt to the tactical structures and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.
Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Personal talent is important but England know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when celebrity prevails. Still, a point has been made.
The midfielder had much to ponder after not being selected of last month’s squad. He watched England secure their spot at the tournament without him. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach mention valuing the team's dynamism and principles. Naturally, he has responded in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for his club versus Barcelona and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have made his squad place precarious.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no value to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that representing the national team is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support around the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham possesses the edge. You need that kind of fire to reach the heights that he reached. We all need to support him and create an environment which he can use his drive against rivals and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Well, how about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 in need of support and direction. He has been absent for England since March and has struggled to perform well this year but Tuchel could not ignore the player after how he played in the Champions League match against the German side recently.
The issue, however, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to select another youngster once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting the captain's style in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel repeating that if it hurts the attacking balance. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. He is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel wants him close to Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea regarding him for years. I think it suits him the most.”
He agreed there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is additionally accustomed to representing Man City in a certain structure, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
Tuchel discussed one star making runs for tap-ins and Foden netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest is high.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives should Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter assisting the captain to score in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other once during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to start against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires him onside but he will be observing him closely. Leave the ego at the door. It will make a powerful squad into an more effective one.
